This anniversary feature is celebrating the extraordinary 30-year story of Island Companies Ltd., a story which saw a young Caymanian man of humble beginnings take his business from a small sporting goods and T-shirt store to being the largest duty-free retailer in Cayman, shaping George Town and the economic landscape of the country he loves.
His dynamic lifelong friend and director John Rea, and previous director and visionary Lee Aronfeld helped guide the company on its path and made immeasurable contributions at shaping Island Companies into the company it is today.
Today Island Companies offers an abundance of products and services, dominating the waterfront of George Town and capturing the imagination of visitors and residents alike.
The three new stores opening this year at Camana Bay will push the total number to more than 30 for the first time, demonstrating the strong growth and commitment to service the company has even in the presence of pressing economic times.
In George Town, Island Companies’ positions are a mixture of old and new – with the classic locations of the Duty Free Centre and Duty Free on the Waterfront, and the newer acquisitions of the Landmark building, Island Plaza and the location of both stores and the company’s new HQ – the Flagship building.
The products now on offer include loose diamonds and gemstones, designer sunglasses, crystal, cigars, historical coins and artifacts, fine jewellery and timepieces, figurines, cameras, perfume and cosmetics, leather goods, executive pens, T-shirts, hats and CDs to name just some of the seemingly never-ending list.
Add to this a team of experienced and creative jewellers for repairs and custom made jewellery, and a vastly experienced Swiss watchmaker, and it is easy to see how Island Companies impacts many living on and visiting the Island.
Island Companies Ltd. is such a diverse retailer that summing it up can be challenging. Perhaps MD and founder Renard Moxam puts it best; ‘Our company isn’t fixed. Who knows where and what we’ll be in the future. That’s the great thing about this company, we can be whatever we want, we can change as the world around us does.’
