GT finally off the mark

George Town earned their first win against Roma while Elite FC and Sunset remain deadlocked with 13 points at the top of the Cayman Islands Football Association new Premier League competition.

So far five rounds of games have been played. George Town defeated Roma 3-1 at the Ed Bush Stadium and Elite came from behind to hold back Tigers FC 3-2 at the Annex Sports Ground in George Town while Sunset did likewise to get past Latinos 3-1 at this same venue.

Carlos Powery put Tigers ahead in the seventh minute slipping a penalty past Elite’s keeper Joseph James. This did not ruffle the confident Elite team who levelled the score seven minutes later with a goal from national representative Gabriel Godet.

In the 18th minute Elite went further ahead with a goal from the prolific former national representative Ardin ‘Cheeky’ Rivers taking the score to 2-1.

Jason Ebanks was next on the score sheet in the 21st minute as Elite took over the game from Tigers completely making some intelligent passes and advancing to goal.

During the second half Tigers came out more purposeful taking over the game and driving their opponents into a defensive mode. This proved worthwhile as in the 63rd minute Powery netted his second goal to give his team hope.

These efforts were short-lived however, as try as they may the score remained 3-2 in Elite’s favour.

In the feature game between Sunset and Latinos it was Latinos who drew first blood in the seventh minute with a goal from Allean ‘Papa’ Grant the man who made history scoring a goal on Bermuda for the national team in the road to South Africa games earlier on in the year.

In the 18th minute Eric Brown levelled and in the 44th minute Chris Brown netted for Sunset to end the first half 2-1.

Latinos made all three substitutions but still could not make it on the score sheet while Eric Brown completed his double in the 73rd minute to land his team a comfortable 3-1 win over Latinos.

Down in West Bay at the Ed bush Playfield Justin Pierre scored a double in the 15 and 67 minutes while Garth Anderson netted in the 20th for George Town.

Wayne ‘Bigga’ Smith netted the 87th minute goal for Roma.

Elite and Sunset are both now leading the standings with 13 points, Future on 7 points, George Town and Scholars International on five each, Tigers Latinos on four each and Roma on a single point.

Games are scheduled to continue on Sunday December 14 after the start of the Digicel Cup Knock Out competition this weekend when Future SC takes on Roma at 5pm and Elite face Scholars International at 7pm at the Ed Bush Stadium.

At the Annex George Town hosts Sunset at 5pm and Latinos face Tigers at 7pm.
