Teed up to be No.1

It’s been a great year for local golfers and the Cayman Islands Golf Association intends to build on that in 2009.

It will send a full team to the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships in Turks & Caicos (2-9 August) and also a mens’ team to compete in the Island Games in Aland, off the coast of Sweden (27 June-4 July).

In August, when Cayman hosted the Caribbean Amateur Championships at the North Sound Club, the men’s team came a best -ever second. They hope to go one better next time.

There will be team qualifiers that will count for selection for both events. The team for the Island Games will be chosen from the leading qualifiers with the committee reserving the right to a single selection if it considers this to be in the best interests of the team.

The basic qualifying process and criteria for next year’s team are similar to last year. In essence there will be six stroke play qualifying events and participants must play in at least four with the best four scores to count.

The first qualifier is on 10 January and the second on 14 February.
