Two people were hospitalised Monday morning with burn injuries following an explosion inside an apartment in the Prospect area of Grand Cayman.
Fire crews were called out to the scene on Dogwood Street near Mangrove Avenue around 6.30am.
According to ambulance crews, both burn victims were conscious and breathing, but did require hospitalisation.
Fire crews were on scene Monday morning investigating the cause of the explosion. Initial reports were that a gas stove had blown up inside the apartment.
Andre Woodman, who lives across the street, saw the scene unfold just after dawn.
‘We saw everybody running out of the house,’ Mr. Woodman said. ‘I saw the one lady coming out, she was crying and they had a towel wrapped around her. Also, the glass door blew off and came straight out by the road there.’
A third individual on scene was reported to have minor lacerations, but it was not certain if those were related to flying objects from the explosion.
A large portion of the ceiling inside the apartment where the blast occurred was missing and there were cracks in the wall from the force of it.
The building’s owner was on scene Monday and work crews were cleaning up the mess, attempting to salvage whatever they could.
The conditions of the two people burned in the blast were not known by press time.
