Peanut butter products pose risks

The Department of Environmental Health is advising the public that an alert has been issued by the Food and Drug Administration concerning an outbreak of salmonellosis in peanut butter and peanut paste.

peanut butter

Peanut butter products may be contaminated with the Salmonella bacterium.

The foods are manufactured by the Peanut Corporation of America at its Blakely, Georgia, and may be contaminated with the Salmonella bacterium.

The recalled peanut butter and peanut paste were distributed to institutions, food service industries, and private label food companies in 24 states, the province of Saskatchewan in Canada, Korea and Haiti. Because the affected product was used as an ingredient in the manufacturing of other food products such as cookies and candies, this health advisor affects a number of products from different companies.

Voluntary food recalls have been issued for such brands as Keebler cookies, Austin Cookies, and Famous Amos Cookies.

The officials in the Food Safety section of the Department of Environmental Health are currently investigating for the presence of the all affected products in all local supermarkets and distributors, both here and the Sister Islands. If any affected products are found, they will be removed immediately from supermarket shelves.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children; frail or elderly people; and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhoea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances the organism may get into the bloodstream, producing more severe illnesses such as infected aneurysms, endocarditis, and arthritis. If you have eaten any peanut based products and are experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact your medical provider immediately.
