Last Saturday was a great time to be a kid.
A one day free flag football camp was put on at the Cayman International School Field from 12noon until 3:30pm.
Hosted by the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association and One 345 Designs the camp aimed at girls and boys aged 8-14.
Youngsters got a chance to complete basic drills across a number of different ‘stations’ on passing, receiving, punting and other skill sets.
If that were not exciting enough the kids were blessed with a star presence. Dallas Cowboys tight-end Martellus Bennett showed up on the day.
Bennett did schoolyard games with the kids (including classics like ‘duck, duck, and goose’ and ‘freeze tag’), gave a brief speech on staying active and signed autographs on everything from shirts and hats to shoes.
If Bennett’s presence was not enough much of Cayman’s star athletes were out as well. Names like track star Kareem-Streete Thompson, fighter Peter Lewison and sportsman David Taylor all graced the sidelines.
Of course a flag football camp would not be complete without some of Cayman’s own talent in the sport present. The likes of Perry Levy, Ike Bush and Brad Connolly were on hand to serve as coaches during the day.
In addition members of the Men’s champion team One 345 Farm Soldiers were out in force. Guys like Jeff Wight, Renford Barnes and Celester Anderson were all over the place.
By day’s end the hundreds of kids gathered to brave the hot sun were a tired but content bunch.
Among the happy campers were 11 year-old Nicole Whittaker [daughter of Mickey and Sally Whittaker] and 14 year-old Avondre Nixon [son of Al and Maria Nixon].
Whittaker, a student at Cayman Prep, said she was a big Cowboys fan [and sporting her Cowboys T-shirt backed that up] and was ‘so happy’ to see Bennett out on the field.
It may sound strange that such a young girl is big into American football but the fact that her dad Mickey is from Texas might explain a lot.
Meanwhile Nixon (a George Town native) was out sporting a Dallas Cowboys jersey. His favourite team is also the Cowboys though his favourite player is Terrell Owens.
Nixon talked about his love for pigskin action.
‘[American] football is my favourite sport and I want to play in the youth league. The Cowboys are my favourite team and T.O is my hands-down favourite player.
‘Martellus would be my second-favourite. He’s a good athlete to me but I prefer T.O more.’
