His classmates at Red Bay Primary School say Nathan is the nicest person and they would like to see him get better.
After Hurricane Ivan in 2004, five-year-old Nathan Bendo-Carias was diagnosed with a heart condition.
His mom, Sonya Bendo-Carias, said Nathan was born a normal little boy but after Hurricane Ivan he developed a viral infection and started getting high fevers and seizures.
After receiving the doctor’s referral for overseas treatment, a heart condition was diagnosed.
A membrane is growing and blocking the main valve to his heart. Another area of the heart is also leaking blood and he needs open heart surgery. Bendo-Carias said the family is waiting on a heart monitor and when it is available the doctors will advise them.
Nathan attends school when he can. Ms Sherene Brown, his teacher, said Nathan is a well-behaved student, likes to draw, tries hard at his work and is active in school.
Nathan’s mom is a Caymanian, but the costs of her travelling expenses to and from Florida are not covered by insurance.
To help cover travel costs, Nathan’s family is appealing for donations.
Airline miles on Cayman Airways can be donated by contacting Bonnie Arch at [email protected] or 949-8200.
The family has also established bank accounts at the Credit Union and Butterfield.
At the Credit Union, deposit donations in the name of Nathan Bendo-Carias #35758 and at Butterfield, Juan Carias or Sonya Bendo-Carias at #02201 110657 or email [email protected]
