Work has begun on a four-month project to build three new classrooms and convert three more at Red Bay Primary School.
The government school, which teaches more than 400 students from ages 4 to 11, will have a full complement of reception classes for up to 72 pupils following completion of the work.
Ron Wilson’s Equipment and Construction signed a contract for the build with the Ministry of Education on 29 Aug. and began work the next day. It is expected to be completed by year end.
According to a press release issued on Monday, 11 Sept., Education Minister Juliana O’Connor-Connolly said she felt “profound satisfaction” with the ministry’s accomplishment.
“Education is the bedrock of our society, and every child deserves a nurturing environment to begin their learning journey,” she said.
“Equipping our government schools with ample reception classes will give children the necessary tools and support to succeed in their educational journey.”
The three new classrooms will be dedicated to Year 6 pupils, while the current three Year 6 classrooms will be converted into reception classrooms – each accommodating up to 24 students.
This will allow reception-age children in the school catchment area to access education at the school rather than having to seek alternative facilities outside the district.
The reception classroom block will be equipped with restrooms and storage, the press release said.
In 2022, the school received two government grants to improve its reception outdoor area by installing artificial turf, constructing wooden planter boxes and more.
Red Bay Primary School on Shamrock Road opened in 1993.
In its latest inspection reports in January 2020 and in September 2022, the school was awarded a ‘satisfactory’ rating.
The mission of the school is to promote ‘integrity, compassion and excellence, underpinned by a commitment to academics, social skills and altruistic behaviour’.
