Books & Books, in conjunction with the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park and the Cayman Islands Orchid Society, will host the special event, Orchids, Jewels of the Forest, to celebrate the annual orchid show.
On Thursday, 5 March, the bookstore will be transformed with beautiful orchids. At 7pm, Kirkland Nixon, president of the Cayman Islands Orchid Society, will give an educational presentation, highlighting species suitable for growing in the Cayman Islands and sharing his personal growing tips.
Mr. Nixon, a retired fire chief, now has time to dedicate more time to expanding his private orchid collection, the largest in the Cayman Islands. Mr. Nixon is considered one of Cayman’s leading experts on orchids, and will be able to share his knowledge with visitors during both his presentation and a question and answer session which will follow.
As Chief Fire Officer, Mr. Nixon maintained a well-disciplined 100 per cent Caymanian entity with a compliment of 136 fire officers. Honoured twice by the Queen, with the MBE and the Queen’s Fire Service Medal, Chief ‘Kirky’ Nixon served his country for 34 years.
He was also the recipient of CITN’s Community Service Award and a charter member of the Lions Club.
An extensive selection of orchid-related books will also be available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public.
