Earlier this year the Department of Tourism announced that the Year 6 class of the George Town Primary School won Disney’s Environmentality Challenge 2009 in the Cayman Islands.
Through their project, titled Environmental Stewardship Programme, students of Ms Wilean Hill and Ms Tasha Miller set out to educate their school, community and even visitors on the many ways they could do their part to make a difference in the environment.
They made presentations to each grade level at George Town Primary School to educate their peers on the importance of protecting the environment. The students also created informational brochures with tips on how to reduce, reuse and recycle.
The brochure was translated into several different languages, including Spanish and Mandarin, to be shared with the many tourists that visit the Island of Grand Cayman.
Additionally, the students organised a beach cleanup to rid the shoreline of debris and litter and created their own blog – www.gtpsenvironmentalchallenge.blogspot.com – to keep the community informed of their progress every step of the way.
