A 67-year-old East End man was hospitalised Monday after police said he was beaten during a burglary-turned-robbery at his house.
Police said the man, identified by family and friends as Edward Rankine, was returning home after 10pm Sunday and surprised two men inside his house on Sea View Road.
The suspects allegedly assaulted Mr. Rankine using a baseball bat then took his wallet and ran from the home, according to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.
Mr. Rankine was hospitalised in stable condition Monday, Health Services Authority officials said. He had suffered serious head and arm injuries, according to police. He was being treated in the George Town Hospital’s surgical unit at press time Monday.
The subsequent police investigation at the Sea View Road home recovered the weapon that was believed to have been used in the assault. The victim was able to give a statement to officers.
No arrests were reported at press time.
RCIPS detectives asked anyone who was in the area of East End late last night or who may have seen the two robbery suspects to call Bodden Town Police Station at 947-2220 and ask for the Criminal Investigation Department.
In a separate and apparently unrelated attack, RCIPS arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with a weekend robbery outside Batabano Plaza in West Bay.
The suspect, Jonathan Mellard, has been charged with robbery and was scheduled to appear before magistrates Monday.
The victim in the attack said the suspect approached him outside the plaza around 8.30pm Friday, put a razor blade to his throat and demanded the victim hand over the alcohol he was carrying.
The robbery victim told police he handed over some beer bottles and the suspect took off. He was arrested a short while later.
