Referendum turnout lower

According to preliminary counts from the Elections Office, voter participation in the constitutional modernisation referendum was significantly lower than in the general election.

Data compiled by the Caymanian Compass shows that nearly 1,700 people who voted in the general election did not vote in the referendum.

Overall turnout in the election was just about 80 per cent of eligible Cayman Islands voters. Turnout in the referendum was just below 71 per cent.

The largest under vote on the constitutional referendum came from West Bay voting district, where fewer than 65 per cent of eligible voters chose the participate in the referendum. Some 81 per cent of West Bay voters cast ballots in the general election.

The districts with the largest percentage of voters participating in the constitutional modernisation vote were Bodden Town and North Side.

The referendum result won’t be known until Thursday afternoon when elections officials finish counting votes.
