West Bay setting up for success

Tomorrow evening sees the launch of
the West Bay district volleyball league.

The adult and youth sections of the
league are slated to be in action from 6:30pm at the John A Cumber primary school
hall.

First up are the youngsters as the
Star Ballers take on the Warriors before the Warriors go back into action again
versus the Incredibles.

After that the more mature players
take the court as the North West Pointers take on the Matadors at 7:30pm.

From there Future SC takes on Above
the Net at 8pm before the Upsetters and West Bay Spikers wrap things up at
8:30pm.

In all, seven teams make up the
district league with three squads in the youth and four teams in the adult sections.

Tomorrow’s games come after the
league held tryouts last weekend at the primary school.

Over 40 adults and children came
out. The attendees were a mix of community figures such as police officers and
sports persons.

Some of the notable names present
were Noel Williams (president of the Cayman Islands
volleyball Federation), Courtisha Ebanks (a young starlet in football and
basketball) and Danny Ebanks (who has done well in basketball and five-a-side
football).

In fact Cayman Free Press’
five-a-side football had good representation as Ebanks (who played on the side
last year) was joined by stalwart Bruce Powery.

Powery in fact proudly wore his
orange jersey (two days before the team debuted the new kits at Kings) as he
guided his son in drills on the court.

Tomorrow’s league is the main
effort of the West Bay Sports Committee, which is overseen by the Department of
Sports. League volunteers are organized by sports committee executive members Gloria
Glidden, Amy Burke, Dion Brandon, Chelsea Rivers, Clara Smith and Gerry
Robinson.

For the record the district
volleyball league is aimed at building positive character in children, strengthening
community cohesion and improving health.

The West
Bay league comes as the East End league gets going this month. East
End also has a swim program in place that started two Saturdays
ago.

Games in the West Bay
league take place every Saturday from 6:30pm at the primary school. Matches for
the adult league run until March 6 while the youth league wraps up March 13.
