Saints copy pros

The New Orleans Saints had a great
year in pro football winning the Super Bowl. Cayman’s version of the team
earned similar props last weekend.

The Cayman Islands Flag Football
Association Saints claimed the senior division title in the second annual The
Security Centre Youth Flag Football league at Camana Bay.
Like the NFL Saints it was their first championship.

Last Saturday the Saints were one
of four teams in action in the senior division. Matches were played on a round
robin format.

In the first game the Saints faced
the Auto Spa Giants. Despite strong scoring drives from the Saints, the Giants answered
right back, showing they had improved in a big way. In the end though, the Saints
prevailed with a final score of 32-12.

From there the Saints took on the
Universal AC Ravens who had defeated them two weeks ago. The Saints were ready
for the Ravens this time and defeated them 34-13.

The final match was the Auto Spa
Giants against the Universal AC Ravens, which the Ravens just managed to win. The
result was that the Ravens and Saints had identical records but the Saints had
the better point differential to nab the title.

Over in the middle division the
championship match saw the Dart Cayman Islands Dolphins (the fourth seed) take
on the Al La Kebab Titans (second seed and defending champions). The Dolphins
gave the Titans all they could handle and had a lead throughout the game.

However on the last minute of play the
Titans managed to score to win 23-18. The Titans won the championship for the
second year in a row.

The Security Centre Packers also
took on and defeated the Broadhurst Buccaneers in the consolation game.

In the junior division the
championship match was between the number one seed and undefeated Burger King
Gators against the second seeded Walkers Wolverines.

League organizer Kyle Broadhurst
stated the match was of the most entertaining on the day.

“The Wolverines were the only team
to have come close to defeating the Gators so I knew it was going to be a good
game,” Broadhurst said. “The Wolverines did not disappoint and came ready to
play.

“They took an early lead on the
Gators and never looked back winning the game and pulling off the upset 20-13.”

Meanwhile the Maples Raiders took
on and defeated the SRS Steelers in the consolation game.

Broadhurst went on to thank all the
persons who helped make the league a success and announced plans of an
end-of-season party this weekend.

“We are having a party this
Saturday 8 May at the Brickhouse at 11am until 1pm. We will be thanking the
players, coaches, sponsors and parents while giving out prizes and having some
pizza to celebrate another successful season.

“I thank the community for their
support this season and for taking time out for this league.”
