One of Britain’s best loved
sportsmen is here this weekend to help raise money for Sunset Football Club.
Former WBC heavyweight champ Frank
Bruno will share his fascinating story with locals at Fidel Murphy’s on Saturday
and in a golf scramble on Sunday and possibly at the boxing gym on Monday.
Bruno was a knockout specialist but
lost his big contests to technically better fighters. Yet he still recorded 40
wins in 45 bouts, including 38 knockouts.
His perseverance was as astounding and
he finally won the heavyweight title at the fourth attempt in 1995 by outpointing

Bruno, 48, is still as popular now
as when he retired 14 years ago although he had a spell in a mental hospital
when suffering from bi-polar.
Still much in demand on the
celebrity circuit, Sunset have done well in getting him over here. Bruno is a
West Ham supporter which will please many of the east enders connected with
Sunset’s Neil Purton said: “Aside
from being a boxing legend Frank is also one of Britain’s best loved sports
“We will be auctioning memorabilia
including boxing gloves signed by Mike Tyson and photos autographed by Ricky
Hatton, Henry Cooper, Joe Frazier, Lennox Lewis, Jake La Motta and many more.”
Tickets are $75 and include a
Purton added: “In addition to the
Saturday event we will also be hosting a Frank Bruno Golf competition at the
North Sound Club on Sunday.
“This will be a two man scramble
event with a shotgun start at 1.30pm. We have lots of prizes and Frank will be
on hand throughout the afternoon from 12.30pm to meet and greet golfers and
also to make sure that everyone behaves!”
The cost is $50 entry fee per
player which will also include a meal in the club house afterwards catered by
Eduardo’s. Sunset also have the usual Caybrew sponsorship for this event. For
non-golf club members they have negotiated a members guest rate of US$100 which
will be payable directly to the golf club shop.
