Shooting outside WB bar, one arrested

Royal Cayman Islands Police confirmed late Thursday that a man had been shot and injured outside a West Bay bar.

Shots were fired around 8.40pm near Kelly’s Bar on Birch Tree Hill Road in the vicinity of Reverend Blackmon Road. Witnesses at the scene said the victim had been hit in the leg by gunfire.

Police said the man was being treated at the Cayman Islands hospital for a gunshot wound. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

He was identified by friends and relatives as Andy Barnes.

One 18-year-old man was arrested later the same evening in connection with the shooting. No one else was hit by the gunfire.

The shooting was the first in the West Bay district since a string of violent attacks occurred there in February and March.

Investigators declined comment on whether Thursday’s incident had any relation to the February 15th shooting death of four-year-old Jeremiah Barnes outside the Hell Esso petrol station.

Come on over to Cayman Brac, where the living is tranquil and full of peace, where gunshots and holdups don’t exist. You can buy a safe (worry-free) home here on this island – beachfront properties going for a song (and not much more)!
