A new initiative from Education for
Advancement and its academic partner Ashworth College is making it a lot easier
for some students in the Caribbean to pursue online education.
Ashworth College, which provides
accredited distance education in the United States, is offering $50,000 in
scholarships to assist Caribbean-based students pursuing a degree online in the
2010-2011 academic year. The money will be divided to provide one-year full
scholarships for up to 20 people.
“We want to empower residents of
the Caribbean from all walks of life to earn a degree that will help them
advance personally and professionally,” said EFA President John Evans.
“We will consider candidates who have
proven themselves academically or through their work experience and also
demonstrate a financial need.”
Ashworth has agreements with
colleges throughout the Caribbean to allow full credit transfer from local
associate degree programs and also allows applicants to receive credits for
life experience in work, the military and even volunteer positions.
By accepting associate degree and
life-experience credits, Ashworth helps accelerate the college process, making
it possible for some students to complete a full bachelor’s degree in 12
Students who are awarded
scholarships will have access to over 20 self-paced degree courses, which
include business, management, accounting, finance, early childhood education,
marketing and criminal justice.
Through EFA, residents of the
Caribbean can take classes online from any location and work at their own pace,
allowing them the flexibility to pursue their degree while holding a job in
their community or raising a family at home.
Students will receive all the
necessary study materials, textbooks, academic support and access to fellow
students in the Caribbean and worldwide. They will also have the opportunity to
attend study-related events locally during the course of their studies and a
formal graduation ceremony in Atlanta.
The deadline to apply for an Ashworth College scholarship through
EFA is 20 August.
