Photographers shoot for excellence

The Caymanian Compass and Cathy
Church’s Photo Centre ran their annual photography competition last month with
the focus being on ‘water’.

We had nearly 150 entrants with the
photography being of a very high standard. Twelve finalists were chosen by
Cathy Church herself with the winners going to go into the Cayman Free Press
2011 calendar. Cathy said of the judging, “The entries this year were fabulous
and varied. I looked for classic composition, good photographic technique as
well as interest and whether the theme of water was visually well represented
in the photo. I invited the opinions of five other photographers and, as
always, everyone had different opinions. Everyone can choose their own
favourites and those who did not win should not be discouraged.”

The winner was Mike Sutton-Brown
with his “tarpon with silversides” photo.

Mike said, “The photograph was
taken at Eden Rock towards the end of the day. I had taken a photo like this
once before and wanted to try and improve it. I was very happy with the way
this one turned out and hope that people will enjoy it.”

Second place went to Ales Cevala
with his wonderful iguana coming out of the water. And third place to Tonny
Yong with a beautiful photo of the Valhalla in George Town at dusk. The other
finalists were Georgia Woodcock, Cristina Tasani, Barbara Virano, Melissa
Leslie, Gina Athey, Greg Lipton, Fakry Jaffar, Sarah Bartell and Suraj Lama.
There were also honourable mentions to Carol Kerr, Diana Brodowska, Gareth
Jagger and Vanessa Polack. All the finalist photo’s can be viewed on
caycompass.com with the calendar going on sale 1 October at Cayman Free Press
and other retail outlets.
