David Butler is the newest addition
to the Appleby team.
Mr. Butler has joined Appleby’s
Litigation and Insolvency Practice Group as an associate, arriving with five
years’ experience in commercial litigation and alternative dispute resolution
gained at SJ Berwin in London. He obtained
his Bachelor of Laws at University College London, where he was awarded the SJ
Berwin prize for outstanding achievement in the Intermediate Year and the Andrews
and Webber prizes.
Mr. Butler specialises in complex
and multi-jurisdictional financial disputes.
He has advised clients on a wide range of general company and commercial
matters, including contractual disputes, shareholder disputes, claims against
directors, partnership disputes and claims by and against investors in private
equity and hedge fund structures.
Among the significant matters in
which Mr. Butler has been involved are defending an investment bank in
proceedings relating to the bank’s repurchase business, advising a fund of
hedge funds in a dispute with a former investment professional, and acting for
London’s largest provider of clearing and settlement services in connection
with losses it sustained after it fell victim to a “pump and dump” scheme.
In addition, Mr. Butler advised and
worked on a number of significant regulatory, criminal and quasi-criminal matters
in the UK.
“We are delighted that a candidate
of David’s skill and expertise is attracted to Appleby in the Cayman Islands to
continue to develop their legal career,” said Nick Joseph, the partner who made
the application to court for his admission.
“We believe that our reputation as
the leading and largest offshore litigation practice enables us to recruit the
best professionals available. David is a welcome addition to our team and we
know that he will complement the group well.”
