Race fit made a little easier

The Cayman Islands Marathon,
Half-Marathon and Four-Person Relay is only three months away and there are a
number of organisations on the island who are willing to help both novice and
veteran runners train for the event and achieve their personal best.

Getting the motivation to start at
all is often the problem but with the range of options to join fitness
programmes in Cayman, that isn’t necessarily still the case.

The race is on Sunday 5 December
and Laura Ribbins of Fitness Connection will be conducting her popular training
programme again which focuses on half marathon runners and walkers and features
a couple of morning and evening runs. She can be contacted on 916-0703 or by
email at [email protected]

The Energy Running Club will also
be offering a programme this year after a successful debut for the 2009
race.  This year, Energy has designed a
unique run club workout that consists of a six-week group training programme
with in-studio workouts that will give participants a break from the heat. Each
session will be led by a certified trainer and all exercises have been created
to help strengthen the core, improve flexibility and increase power and speed
for trainees’ best runs yet.  The cost
for the programme is $100 per person, and includes weekly fit-tip emails, a
running journal and a running schedule.
Space is limited so interested persons should contact Energy as soon as
possible on 946-6006 or [email protected]

For the first time, training will
be available this year for those persons interested in running the team relay
event. New company PhysioSpa Clinic is presenting ‘Learn to Run’, a 10-week
clinic that will prepare participants for the four-person relay. The focus will
be on injury prevention, proper footwear, nutrition on race day, general
nutrition, stretching, yoga, hydration, proper stride technique and marathon
techniques. The programme will run from Wednesday 29 September until Wednesday
1 December and the cost is $50. No running experience is necessary. For more
information, contact Krissy at 947-2772.

The Wednesday Night Running Club, a
staple on the running circuit and organised by Tony Watts, is a group of
runners who meet each Wednesday at 6pm in the parking lot of World Gym and run
a five mile loop. There is no cost, the atmosphere is casual and all levels of
runners are welcomed. For more information, contact Tony on [email protected]

“We are so excited to hear about
these running clubs that offer guidance and support to people who are
interested in participating in the Cayman Islands Marathon,” said Rhonda Kelly,
race director. “There are so many people who are unsure about how to train,
whether they are doing it right or doing enough and then there are those who
might not have the support system and need some motivation. These programmes
are a great way to meet new people, learn some useful training tips and prepare
both mentally and physically for the event. I encourage everyone, especially
novice runners, to sign up for one of these programmes and expect great results
on Sunday 5 December!”
