The Vivian Rankine memorial darts
tournament lived up to the hype last weekend. A new champion was crowned and he
is no stranger to the local darts community.
Filipino star Mel Tagalog won the
tournament’s overall crown. He claimed the A division crown over Hank Ebanks
and defeated B division winner Paul Anglin in the championship match. Tagalog’s
success was not a surprise as a number of people were wary of him, including
tournament organizer Martin Bodden and defending champion Eddie Ballantyne.
Speaking of Ballantyne, the
Scotsman apparently was rusty from his home renovations. He was knocked out in
this year’s playoff stages alongside 2008 champion Richard Campbell. The Vice
President of the Cayman Islands Darts Association did redeem himself somewhat
by placing second in the A division of the doubles segment alongside Trevor
Lloyd.
Darts association President Paul
Anglin nabbed the B division crown ahead of Randy Cruz. The Anglin household
would prove to be a happy one after the tournament as Paul’s brother Cassius
came second in the B division doubles category alongside Hiram Wright.
That pairing came up short to Arek
Archibold and Hank Ebanks. Archibold was in top form throughout the tournament
in spite of facing his mum Irma Smith in the opening stages. The A division doubles
champions were Earl Smith and Rodan Asuncion.
Michelle Terry would end up as the
women’s champion.
