George Rankine is the chief
beneficiary of the annual Vivian Rankine memorial darts tournament. Based on
estimates from this year’s competition, the young man is well on his way to a
personal dream.
According to tournament organizer
Martin Bodden, some CI$11,500 now sits in an account for Rankine. That money
has been collected through the life of the event, which recently completed its
11th year. Rankine, 16, wants to go away to college to achieve a degree in
marine biology and that money will supplement the cost of his education.
Bodden states that financially the
event is accomplishing its goal.
“In 2008 we had $7,000 in the
account,” Bodden said. “The fact that we now have over $11,000 means things are
looking good. I thank everyone for their generous support. I’d especially like
to highlight LIME, our major sponsor, who has been on board from day one.
Thanks to them we went green, lime green, with the tournament this year.”
The other sponsors were Corner
Pocket, International Map Services, Cayman Island Proper Service Management,
Carlos and Martin’s Tex-Mex restaurant, Jacques Scott, Cayman Distributors and
Tortuga Rum Company.
The tournament honours the late
Vivian Rankine, who passed away in 1998. Rankine was an officer for the Royal
Cayman Islands Police Service and was an avid sports enthusiast, especially
with darts. George is Vivian’s son and an only child.
