Buttonwood domino club have been
around for quite sometime. The club has quietly been holding its own in local
matches and now finds itself atop the current league.
Through the first month of the 2010
Cayman Dominos League, Buttonwood are unbeaten with three wins to their name.
Captaining the squad has been local basketball referee Alvin Bryan, who has
proven to be quite the domino mind. Bryan has done a good job managing talents
like national boxing coach Donie Anglin. Arguably Buttonwood’s signature win
was over arch-rivals Island All Stars and team captain Nevel Campbell on home
turf in the season opener.
The East End Mystics are close on
their heels with three wins of their own. The side has a number of solid
players like Noel “Leon” Conolly that balance out characters like Phil Miller.
Guiding the team is grizzled veteran Billy McLaughlin.
Third place is a close battle
between Archie’s and Island All Stars, who both have two wins. From there
Kelly’s (out of West Bay) and Singh’s Roti Shop have a win. Two sides are still
without a victory on the season in Helium (featuring star Kristin Williams) and
Meringue Town.
In spite of their winless record,
the vibe around the Helium team is positive. Helium team manager Keith “Chilly
B” Barnes stated earlier in the season that his team is a developing talent.
“I’m still quite happy with the
results,” Barnes said. “Helium is the youngest team and the fastest improving
team in the league. The rest of the clubs are worried about us. Several players
on our team can stand out for us this season. Everyone has the spirit and the
drive.”
Matches take place this Sunday from
roughly 2pm until 8pm. Singh’s hosts East End while Helium hosts Meringue Town.
Round one of the league continues through to 12 December with round two
starting up in January.
