Favourite fun for a rainy day

Although Cayman is a tropical
destination, enjoying a rainy day is easy with a little forethought for
families and singletons who want to give the TV remote a rest at the weekends.

Following are just a few of the
many things you can do on a wet and windy weekend to keep you and yours
entertained and fully occupied.

Get creative

All Fired Up! – as the name
suggests — is a place that conjures up warmth and cosiness. Spend a couple of
hours on a rainy day getting creative fashioning decorative pottery pieces.

Even the most untalented can
harness their inner sculptor with the assistance of some handy stencils,
tracing patterns, and stamps that recall those easy colouring book days.

The airy pottery studio is stocked
with pottery pieces of all sizes and descriptions, just waiting to be painted
and fired.  Whether it’s a decorative
piece you’re looking to make — like a statuette, or something a bit more practical
— like a coffee mug, cereal bowl or a fruit bowl, you’ll surely find what
you’re looking for.

Just in time for Pirates Week there
is even a seasonal section and families can create personalised Christmas
ornaments and decorations, as well as Halloween–themed pieces.

But the studio is not just about
traditional pottery. With a range of wooden forms also on hand, budding
artisans can also create eye-catching mosaics from colourful glass fragments.
Open in the Strand shopping centre, it’s a fun place to get together with
friends and unwind when it is raining. And with a handy drinks fridge on hand,
customers can always bring in a snack or a pizza to enjoy or even a bottle of
wine, while creating a masterpiece.

Get sporty

For the active minded, King’s
Sports Centre is a great wet-weather retreat. With so much going on there,
families can enjoy the full indoor surroundings with classes to suit all tastes
and age groups.  The atmosphere is
relaxed and friendly and members can play squash, football or take part in a
friendly game or two of bowling. The latter, open since January, is a roaring
hit, so book early to ensure a lane. Bowling is open from Tuesday through
Sunday and on weekdays. Call for pricing. Food and shoe rentals are also
available, and there is a fully stocked bar for adults.

Other popular group events include
family skate night on Saturdays from 4.30-7pm; teen jam on Saturdays from
7-10pm, and skating on Sundays from 1-4pm.

The sports centre also has a pro
shop which sells supplements and protein shakes and smoothies, as well as
offering free advice for bodybuilders, novices and the parents of children who
need to put on a bit of weight – ask for Jerome. Parents with active kids might
want to get them signed up for karate classes; the schedule is right after
school at 3.30pm Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. There is also a party room
ready and available for those rained out parties.

Get reel

Tried and tested and now, in some
cases in glorious 3D, movies are always a hit. This is a classic way to not let
a rain-swept day drown your enthusiasm. Ideal for couples, families or groups
of friends, the theatre offers surround-sound, comfy seating, the latest
releases and buckets of hot buttered popcorn. Hollywood Theatres at Camana Bay
has six movie theatres, so there’s always plenty of film action to choose from.

The shows are staggered throughout
the afternoon and evening, with matinee prices available on shows before 6pm.
Just remember, on Saturday night they have a strict night policy that attendees
under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult or parent/guardian. Call
for show times and prices. If it is raining on a Sunday and you want to go to
the movies, remember there is a reduced viewing schedule and no R-rated films
are shown.
