Arrrgh, matey! Pirates invade!

Fearing they would be banished to the gallows after November 2009, more than 100 swashbucklers came ashore for Cayman’s Pirates’ Week 2010 Saturday.

The annual pirates landing in George Town’s Hog Sty Bay had some new twists this year which included a boat full of fetching sirens as well as an appearance by a few zombie pirates.

As usual, the motley crew and their wenches came ashore amid canon fire and flames just before 4pm Saturday, captured a stand-in Cayman Islands Governor and kicked off the annual parade through central George Town.

Here’s a list of the winning floats/groups from the parade competition:

  1. Pirates were escaped convicts, robbers, murderers, rapists, and deceivers. The group nearest to us, a hundred years ago, perish during the earthquake of Port Royal when half the city sank into the sea! Is this what we’re celebrating??? If so, it is a gruesome dark blot to our heritage like slavery.

I have suggested a Seafarer’s Landing with fireworks and great celebration, celebrating the coming home of Caymanian seamen who worked for many months at sea to support their families. That now was a rich part of our heritage! Not this Pirate’s Landing! What are we teaching our children?

  2. RE: Bodden,

No, this is not what we are teaching our children… this is what we are amusing ourselves with for one week out of the year.

The pirate invasion is a small part in a much larger celebration of Caymanian heritage that includes district days to promote traditional Caymanian arts and crafts, and a parade of floats that usually promote the beauty of our island’s natural environment.

Of all the things you could be worrying about – the pirate’s landing is not one of them. Get your priorities straight: If you are so worried about the educational standards in Cayman, then concern yourself with the national curriculum and the future of the half-finished institution in Frank Sound. Not the pirate’s landing.

  3. "Pirates were escaped convicts, robbers, murderers, rapists, and deceivers."

Yeah, but with REALLY cool clothes:)

Hey Bodden? Relax. How does Pirate’s Week HURT you? Or HURT children?

It doesn’t. So pick your battles.

Personally, I believe the lies, hypocrisy and utter NONSENSE that organized religion teach are MUCH more harmful than a few drunk people wearing curtains.

    I’m logical & sensible.

    But hey, that’s just me.

As for the "Seafarer’s Landing" party?

Yes, that’ll be exciting. Everyone wearing rainsuits and smelling like fish.

Tell you what. You throw YOUR party, and let others throw THEIRS.

Don’t like it? Here’s a novel idea. Don’t go. (pssss, that’s me being sensible again)
