The end of the current co-ed
softball season is near and championship glory is on the minds of a select few.
The finals for the three segments
of the 2010 Fall Co-Ed Softball League takes place this week. The competition,
put on by the Cayman Islands Little League, sees matches at the Field of Dreams
facility in George Town.
In the C league the
PricewaterhouseCoopers Scorpions are in the finals for the first time in their
storied existence. Facing them for the league crown and a promotion to the B
league is rookie side team HSBC. On paper the match-up looks one-sided as
Jeremy Forbes and PWC finished atop the regular season standings at 10-2 while
HSBC were just 3-9.
Then again both sides had
surprising showings in the playoffs. PWC just got by team BritCay 13-12 in
spite of the side having just one win on their inaugural campaign. HSBC meanwhile
pulled off a huge upset in downing a 7-4-1 Electratech Pure Energy side 22-13.
Scorpions captain Johan Bruwer
states win or lose his club had a great year.
“This season we have had luck on
our side, but we also played as one team,” Bruwer said. “It has been a great
season for us. We have been building each season with a great bunch of players.
“This season we were lucky to add
some new faces and everyone has been bringing their A-game to the field each
week. It is great knowing that we ended first after the round robin games.”
Bruwer’s team-mate and wife
Nicolene Bruwer echoed those sentiments, adding she empathizes with PWC B, who
were knocked out in the B league semi-final last week.
“Playing in a league with more than
one division is a more difficult route to the final and I think our colleagues
in the B league did very well,” Nicolene said. “It is sad that they can’t
defend their title from last season. Playing in a different league I don’t
think our route is comparable though it is great to be in a final.”
The other two divisions saw their
semi-finals contests earlier this week. The KPMG Bounty Hunters and A.L.
Thompson Drills (captained by Earl Smith) slugged it out for the right to face
the Master Batters in the B league final. Meanwhile the Coors Light Chuggers
and KPMG A duelled in order to tackle Kirk Freeport in the A league title game.
