Miss Earth Cayman raises ‘green’ awareness in Vietnam

Miss Earth Cayman Islands 2010, Samantha Widmer, left for Vietnam on 4 November and since then she has been involved in a number or activities promoting environmental awareness with other contestants in anticipation of the pageant finals on 4 December.

The group participated in sub-sections of the competition by providing humanitarian assistance, participating in environmental activities and promoting the Cayman Islands.

Miss Cayman Earth, along with other contestants, raised money for Vietnamese flood victims by participating in a fundraiser in Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Nam Province.

The contestants visited the My Chau drugstore in central Vietnam where they were each given 100 bags of medicines for distribution to the flood victims. Embracing the theme Beauties for a Cause, the contestants placed some of their own cash in the charity box at the drugstore.

Miss Earth contestants from all over the world and hundreds of Vietnamese and foreign business people attended a charity gala dinner and cultural exchange at the Queen Plaza in Tan Binh district, also to raise funds for flood victims.

A 10-kilogramme ruby – a gemstone painting with the autographs of the contestants – was sold in an auction at the gala for US$200,000. A collection of wooden artworks and several other items donated by participating countries were also sold, They raised approximately US$3,000,000, and the entire amount was given to the Ho Chi Minh Red Cross Society. The gala was jointly organised by the Gia Gia Gemstones Corp., the HCM City Red Cross Society, Lasta Joint-Stock Company, Asean C&C Joint-Stock Co. and Miss Earth international organisers.

A tree planting and parade took place in the city of Phan Thiet on 14 November.

Miss Earth 2009, Larissa Ramos, and the Miss Earth 2010 contestants paraded on golf buggies through the streets of Sea Links City. As part of their environmental protection activities, the contestants planted trees along Mui Ne beach and took part in a green-clean-beautiful campaign at Doi Duong tourist site.

Later, contestants graced the stage for the national costume competition. Miss Widmer showed off the pride of the Cayman Islands (our sea and its environment) as depicted in her costume. The costume was designed by Susan Widmer (the contestant’s mother, a cancer survivor and artist).

On 17 November, 17 contestants competed in two sub-sections of the competition; Samantha made it in the top 40 of the Ao Dai, a traditional gown worn by the Vietnamese women. Contestants were measured and fitted for their gowns and were then trained in presenting themselves.

Miss Widmer won first place in the Miss Earth golf and putting competitions.
