Phoenix riders top Kiwanibike

Some 100 riders completed the cycling course from the Blow Holes in East End to Smith Cove in George Town during the 29th Annual KiwaniBike on Sunday, 7 November.

The distance of roughly 100 miles was made more difficult by a northerly wind, according to organisers of the event. Nevertheless, they pressed on, raising about CI$6,000 for the Kiwanis Key Clubs – found in most high schools – and for the Cayman Heart Fund.

Among the participants were Governor Duncan Taylor and Miss Cayman 2010 Cristin Alexander.

Phoenix Construction won the perpetual trophy for the company raising the most money in proportion to its number of employees, which was calculated at $14.53 per head. As the last perpetual trophy was lost in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan, a new trophy will grace the company’s boardroom for an entire year, along with a permanent certificate of recognition.

Further certificates were won by Ogier Legal, who handed in the pledged total of CI$690, and by PriceWaterhouseCoopers, who won the Most Riders category with 14 cyclists.

David Cooke, who obtained pledges for $270, won a bike supplied by Uncle Bills that was ridden by the Governor; he won in a draw for all riders who raised $100 or more.

“The 29th Annual KiwaniBike was a success despite the difficult economic times,” said Sue Rajah of the Cayman Heart Fund.

Heart Fund officials thanked the Kiwanis Club for including them in this year’s event and for their donation, in addition to thanking all the riders, volunteers and organisers.

Wiekert Weber, president of Kiwanis, noted that the club sends more than 60 Key Club members from Cayman’s high schools to the Key Club convention in Orlando annually.

“During the convention, our teens fellowship with other teen leaders from abroad and are able to share ideas and projects. Sessions on community, leadership, club management and global needs are attended and the result is an increase in their awareness of the roles that they can or will be called upon to play in our society.

“KiwaniBike provides needed funds to assist in the costs of ensuring that any Key Clubber who has the initiative to attend the conference will be able to do so,” he said.

Monique Bush, new chairperson of KiwaniBike, thanked Arie Barendrecht for years of ensuring the continuity of the event, even in the post-Ivan era. She noted that a number of changes are coming to the KiwaniBike.

“The first was introduced this year in that the celebrity bike, ridden this year by the governor, was given away to the individual rider raising the most paid-up pledges.

“Reintroduction of the Perpetual Trophy to grace the boardroom for a year of the company raising the most funds per employee is also part of the new KiwaniBike. Kiwanis is proud to recognise companies who so generously donate of their time, talent and treasure, and those that have become Corporate Members of Kiwanis,” said Ms Bush.
