Cayman will be playing host to world road race champion Thor Hushovd and the rest of the 2011 lineup of team Garmin-Cervelo next week. The team, consisting of some 30 cyclists and 20 support staff, will be holding its first team get together here in Cayman, and there are numerous opportunities for everyone to get involved and welcome some of the top sportsmen in the world to the Cayman Islands.
The team will get a true taste of Cayman as they take part in team building activities through the week, but for local sports fans the red letter day is Thursday, 2 December.
There are two opportunities to interact with the team, the first in the form of a training ride of Thursday morning and the second during an evening function and charity auction.
The Ride with the Pros, sponsored by Walkers, will start at 9am from the Reef Resort in East End. Cyclists can ride with the team as they take an leisurely cruise out to Rum Point and back along Frank Sound Road to the finish at the Reef Resort, where refreshments will be provided.
The entry fee for the ride is US$30 for the ride only, or US$100 including a limited edition cycling shirt autographed by members of the team.
At 7pm, the team will attend Evening with the Pros, sponsored by Piedra Winery, at Camana Bay. The event is the perfect opportunity to mingle with the team in a relaxed atmosphere and will include a charity auction, with the proceeds benefitting the Cayman Islands Cancer Society. The auction includes items of cycling memorabilia donated by Team Garmin-Transitions, including three actual team race bikes. The auction winner will have the opportunity to have a photo taken with the team member who rode the bike as well.
Tickets for the evening are priced at CI$100/US$125, including food by Abacus as well as wine by Piedra Winery and beer by Caybrew.
The team will be out on the roads almost every day, so if you see them out training, be sure to give them a friendly wave and show the warm welcome Cayman is famous for.
