Welds is one Hell of a runner

Pirates Week 2010 was again a great mix of fun attractions and outstanding sporting events. On the last day of the celebrations, however, everything went to Hell.

Actually, it was a group of over 150 early-rising road runners who gathered opposite the Westin Casuarina for the annual pilgrimage to Hell and Back for the 6.2 mile course to West Bay with a turnaround at the Devil’s Hangout.

The devil himself – well Ivan Farrington in costume – spurred runners on there who returned to the Tiki Beach House to enjoy a hearty breakfast.

The race was sponsored by Krys & Associates and Le Bleu. It attracted many overseas runners. Also running was the Governor, His Excellency Duncan Taylor, returning from an overseas conference the evening previous.

Canadian representatives were also involved as well as visitors from New York, Maryland, Ohio, Florida, Iowa, Wisconsin, Arizona and California so this was another welcome boost for Cayman’s ever growing sports tourism industry.

Three-time Venezuelan Olympian and graduate of the University of Alabama and former masters world record holder at 800 metres, William Wuyke, was psyched up about visiting Grand Cayman for the third time and despite a nagging injury, was pleased with his performance.

Winner Ray Welds was familiar with the terrain as he grew up in West Bay and completed the warm and windy course in 39 minutes and 6 seconds. He had won the Pirates Week 5k too so is good shape for the Cayman Triathlon on Sunday.

Not far back was first lady finisher Krissy Dooling at 40:11. Cadets Corps officer Derek Larner marched across the line in third position with a 40:22 timing and 16-year-old Tristan von Kirchenheim clocked 40:48 for the fourth overall spot.

Sara Ellis of Maryland crossed the line tenth overall in 44:01 to gain runners up honours among the women, while Pamela Wittenwyler of Wisconsin clocked 46:28 for third place woman and 17th overall.

Male and female age group winner awards were gained by Tahj Lewis and Tiffany Cole (14 and under); Aaron Aleman(15-19); Richard Barber and Charlotte Cloette (20-29); Conrad Proud and Lizzie Berns (30-39); David Shibli and Jane Robson (40-49); Daniel Shechter-from California and Caroline Courtis(50-59); Roger Davies(60-plus)

In addition to performance awards, a large number of random prizes were distributed. A spokesman for the Phoenix Athletic Club, chief organisers of the event, thanked the Pirates Week Committee, Ken Krys and Tim LeCornu and other staff members of Krys & Associates, the Le Bleu Company, Tiki Beach staff, the Red Cross, the Cadet Corps and all other volunteers for their contributions and support in the coordination of this popular Pirates Week activity.

Anyone who retained their finish cards are asked to call 945-3970 to negotiate the return of these items.
