Anglin praises four on big run

It’s no secret that Collin Anglin has a deep rooted link to basketball.
Thus it may not be much of a surprise that he is one of the supporters of the
local basketball association taking part in the upcoming Cayman Islands
Marathon.

The Cayman Islands Basketball Association has entered a side in the upcoming
Cayman Marathon taking place Sunday 5 December. Four male players will take
part in Chad Leslie, Kerry Hunte, Stephen Shaw and Jace Ebanks.

The young men are running the Cayman Marathon to raise funds for the
national mens team’s participation in next year’s Island Games in the Isle of
Wight sometime in June. The Island Games are a warm-up event in preparation for
the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Senior Championship next year.

Anglin is a stalwart of the national basketball team and currently the
Acting Director for the Department of Sports. The West Bay native gave his take
on the marathon and basketball coming together.

“It’s a great initiative,” Anglin said. “It shows the association is
getting started (thinking about those international competitions) a bit early
and the planning phase is well ahead. These days the association, like with
other organisations, have difficulties in raising funds. Getting involved in
the marathon is primarily about raising funds and not waiting for the last
minute.

“But it’s also about getting creative in publicising the sport. Those
guys are getting exposure not just for their trips but for Cayman basketball.”

All four of the young men taking part in the marathon have a solid link
to basketball. Leslie is a stalwart of the national team and the national men’s
league, playing this year for rookie club the Bulls. Hunte recently came
through the ranks of the Appleby Under-19 Basketball League, which Ebanks is
currently part of with the Esso Blazers. Shaw also took part in the U19 League
in years past and finished his first campaign with the Bulls in the national
men’s league this year.

The side is taking part in the full version of the race in the
four-person relay. The course is 26.2 miles long stretching from the George
Town harbour into Prospect and loops back. Each runner is slated to tackle
about six and a half miles of the course at a time.

The Cayman Marathon is split up into four categories: full, half,
four-person relay and kids fun run. The first three take place Sunday morning
along the previously mentioned course with the kids event at 10.30am from the
Government Administration Building (Glass House) to Breezes By the Bay restaurant
on Harbour Drive.

Interestingly Anglin states he won’t be taking part in the marathon due
to injury and is curious to see how much funds are collected from the marathon.

“I’m actually nursing an injury from this season’s (men’s league) finals
so I’m out for the marathon. What I can say is that I’m interested to see the
amount of people that make use of the software in place to accept donations to
the association electronically.”

Prospective donations can be made by logging on to
http://www.active.com/donate/CaymanBasketball. The website states that the association’s
goal is to generate $5,000.
