The Cayman Islands Marathon attracted several hundred visitors to Cayman last year, with 200 overseas runners participating in the race plus their supporters on the sidelines.
Organisers are expecting that number to increase thanks to a commitment on the part of a couple of running clubs and tour operators to participate in this year’s race which is on Sunday, starting at 5am at Breezes by the Bay.
Joints In Motion, the running club for The Arthritis Society of Canada, has chosen the Cayman Islands as a destination for its members and will be bringing a contingent of around 40 people who are running the race to raise funds for the Society.
Run ‘n’ Fun, a tour operator out of Canada has confirmed a group of 20 at the time of this writing who will be coming specifically to run the Marathon.
“We are so excited about having these groups join us this year,” said race director Rhonda Kelly. “Representatives from Run ‘n’ Fun came last year to scout out the race and they must have had a great experience because they are coming back and bringing friends.
“We have been in talks with Joints In Motion for a couple of years and we are delighted that they chose to make Cayman one of their running destinations. If all goes well, the Cayman Marathon will be on their calendar for every other year moving forward which will help us to build our race.”
Tanya Henry, senior manager of National Events for the The Arthritis Society, said: “Joints In Motion Canada offers participants the opportunity to travel to exotic destinations in support of arthritis education and research.
“Our participants raise an incredible amount of funds for the cause and train to complete a challenging event, such as a marathon or half marathon, as a part of the program.
“Thanks to the Cayman Islands Marathon’s involvement with charities, the safe environment it provides and the fantastic hospitality Cayman Islands has to offer, it was a must on our 2010 destination calendar. We are very excited for our first experience with the Cayman Islands Marathon and Half Marathon.”
