Roma seeking double props

It’s no secret Roma netball club are looking retain its national championship. With a strong second-tier side in the mix Roma might just nab double the kudos by April.

The club’s B team took to the netball courts at Truman Bodden Sports Complex last Saturday. The season opener saw Roma B take down the B side of their rivals All Stars 20-14. As with any match between the two clubs, the contest was a tight one that came down to a few costly errors in the final quarter.

Both sides showed a lot of talent that is sure to be on display this Saturday at 6.30pm in their upcoming matches. Roma B hosts Rising Stars A while All Stars B faces Maples and Calder. The matches (as will be the case for all weekend contests this season) see an admission fee of CI$2 for both adults and children.

Roma have an athletic offence steadied by multi-sport star Jahzenia Thomas. Her softball and flag football skills have translated to relentless footwork and solid body positioning on the court. If Thomas (normally a Goal Shooter) can get more support from the likes of Goal Attack Kristie Hurlston, Wing Attack Danielle Mighty and Centre Samantha Dennis then the offence will be hard to stop.

Defensively the green and yellow warriors feature track and field stars Avril Myers and Anissa Owen. Both are no strangers to netball starring the last two years with All Stars and Storm netball club respectively. Myers (usually Wing Defence) and Owen (Goal Defence) use their leaping ability to thwart many passes. Their effort and hustle makes things a lot easier for Goal Keeper Rashane Frarer.

All Stars meanwhile bring back the same potent offence that steadied last year’s division two championship team. Headlining the group is GA Martika Williams. A member of the club the last few years, Williams is used to scoring under pressure and specializes in an up-tempo style. She has fresh help this year in the form of relative newcomers Trishelle Logan (GS) and WA Shenayea Watson while C Merary Eden returns with her trademark footwork.

On defence things look much different. Noted scorer Whitney General is at GD with Janeka Ebanks (WD) and Kimberly Watler (GK) providing support. General is a young, athletic prospect who can match the work rate of any offensive player. Time will tell if her positioning will keep attackers off balance.
