Crankers launch can attract even more cyclists as sport gains pace

Cayman’s newest cycling club, 53//11 Crankers, will host its first race this weekend, on Sunday and Monday.

The event, known as the Ten Sails Cycle Challenge, will see cyclists take on a 46 mile road race on Sunday and an eight mile time trial on Monday.

The East End Heroes Day Road Race starts from Frank Sound Road and ends at Colliers Beach, with cyclists completing two loops of the Queen’s Highway.

The time trial on Monday will also start from Frank Sound Road and end at Colliers Beach, with both events starting at 7am.

This event will form the first part of a three event series, set to include the Cayman Brac Bluff Challenge on 24 and 25 April and the Tour de GC on 12 and 13 June.

Cyclists can enter for all three events for CI$65, one event for CI$25 or just one of the races in each event for CI$15.

Pre registration will take place at Café del Sol in George Town from 5.15pm to 6.30pm on Friday, with late registration being accepted at the start line of both races from 6am. Late registration will be CI$20 per race, or CI$30 for both races.

The event promises to have a wide variety of random prizes for participants, as well as prizes for the top finishers in each division.

It’s run under Cayman Islands Cycling Association rules, with the proceeds of the event benefitting the Estella Scott Roberts Foundation as well as the Cayman Heart Fund.

For those who are interested in spending the weekend out in the Eastern Districts, the Reef Resort is also offering a staycation special, with 10 per cent off staycation rates for the weekend, as long as participants in the event.
