Dominoes, like many other sports, has been steadily plugging away in 2011. This month should see things heat up as the second half of the season inches along.
A pair of notable matches are on tap this weekend featuring two top clubs. Sunday sees Islands All Stars domino club host team Archies while Meringue Town welcomes in team Singh’s Roti Shop. Both matches, which run roughly 2pm-6pm, are part of round two of the Cayman Islands Domino Association national domino league.
All Stars come into the match looking to improve on its third place rank in round one. Meringue Town were at the opposite end of the spectrum in last place with one win. Archies (fourth) are a decent side while Singh’s (seventh) are hoping for a turn in form.
All are playing catch up to team East End. The squad is still on top of the standings after their latest win last Sunday. The side took down Meringue Town 300-224 on home turf. East End’s winning ways makes good on team captain Billy McLaughlin’s words at Christmas.
“As a team we’re in top form,” McLaughlin said. “A lot of the guys on this team have been playing 20 odd years. They’ve been into the sport a long time. It’s a very close-knit group and it’s very hard to beat us. The dominos have to run real bad to beat us. I don’t fear no team. I take each side on individually.”
Dominos Association press officer Kristin Williams states more good matches are on the way this month.
“The first two matches for February were Helium against Kellys and Meringue Town against East End. The scores were 300-296 to Helium and 300-224 for East End. We are looking forward to a very exciting second round of this tournament.”
