Royal Cayman Islands Police detectives investigating Friday’s abduction and robbery of a West Bay delivery man warn local residents and businesses to be on the lookout for cigarettes being sold by unauthorised sources.
RCIPS Sergeant Dave Morrison said anyone who has information about cigarettes being sold unofficially over the past few days, or who has been offered cigarettes for sale, should contact the police immediately.
The cigarettes stolen in Friday’s robbery included the following brands: Vogue, Rothmans, Benson and Hedges, Craven A, Newport, Dunhill and Kool. Skoal and Copenhagen chewing tobacco products were also taken.
“Remember, if you do buy the stolen property you will be committing a criminal offence,” Sergeant Morrison said.
The abduction and robbery happened around 11am Friday. Police said a 42-year-old delivery man was abducted at gunpoint by three men outside Joe & Ima’s Way Side Store in Boatswain Bay.
Police said the suspects came from behind the store, threatened the driver and forced their way into his van. They then allegedly drove him to the Salt Creek dykes area where they transferred the cigarettes and cash from his van into a white Ford E350 or E250 box-shaped vehicle.
Investigators said the suspects then drove off, leaving the driver and his van in Salt Creek. The van driver was found by police officers a short time later. He was not hurt.
The three male suspects were described by police. The first is about 5 feet, 8 inches tall with a medium build and brown complexion. The second suspect was 5 feet, 7 inches, slim and with a dark complexion. The third man was 5 feet, 1 inch, also slim and dark-skinned. The driver described the third man as having red eyes.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact West Bay Criminal Investigation Department at 949-3999 or to call the confidential Crime Stoppers number 800-8477(TIPS).
