Net gains for spike fans

Volleyball fans get their annual
treat with the return of the biggest tournament in the region next week and to
start it off there were two clinics for children and adults at Public Beach on
Saturday.

Top American pros Stafford Slick
and Marcin Jagoda were here to instruct the kids in a free clinic in the
morning and adults in the evening, with a helping hand from Cayman’s best woman
player, Jennifer Bily.

Besides the clinics, they were also
here to coach Cayman’s men’s and women’s teams. Cristin Alexander, the current
Miss Cayman, who made her international debut in this tournament last year,
will be competing again.

Slick and Jagoda wanted to
represent the USA at the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball
Confederation tournament in Cayman which runs from 25-27 March but others were
picked. The Cayman Financial Review is one of the main sponsors.

Cayman’s volleyball president Noel
Williams said: “So popular is Cayman’s event – which starts off the NORCECA
series – that we have 20 teams on the waiting list hoping to come whereas the
other tournaments have none on their waiting lists.”

Later this week Randy Stoklos will
be here to train the Cayman players and Sinjin Smith will arrive for the finals.
Both are legendary in the sport and credited with pioneering the beach game as
it is today.
