Cristin Alexander has beauty and brains, evidently, but the current Miss Cayman is also a serious volleyball player who in the year she has been competing seriously has improved considerably.
Alexander, 23, is partnering Jennifer ‘JB’ Bily in the women’s team for the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation series which runs at Public Beach from Friday till Sunday.
She said: “There’s been an awful lot of preparation going into this one, obviously and after last year I know what to expect. There’s a bit of anxiety and bit of excitement also all wrapped up into one.
“Last year the most nervous thing was definitely the big crowds, especially as I knew so many people in the crowd which didn’t make it very easy. But I’m used to it now and so it’s going to be great to have their support.”
Alexander is most looking forward to the total experience on home soil. “It’s rare that we get to play against teams at this level so every year it’s an amazing opportunity. There is literally no spare time in her schedule. As well as working for pensions board, her time is divided between Miss Cayman duties and intensive training for the NORCECA event. A lot of juggling there then.
“All three jobs keep me busy but I’m grateful that I can play the roles.”
Which of the three is most enjoyable? “That’s a tough decision,” she smiles but volleyball is definitely not last.
Alexander was in the women’s second team last year with Tarasa Barnett, both newcomers who were under no pressure to excel, just do their best as they learnt the games. It is far different this time though.
“Jennifer is the most experienced female player on the island and it’s an honour to play with her. There are so many overseas teams coming so there is no room for a second Cayman women’s team, so there’s no pressure on us!”
