Cayman pair beat Trinis

On the first day of the NORCECA
beach volleyball tournament at Public Beach on Friday, Cayman’s three teams
battled hard but came unstuck against much more experienced opposition.

Cayman’s top side in the
tournament, Shervin Rankin and Olney ‘OT’ Thompson lost their first match to
Mexico’s Lombardo Ontiveros and Ricardo Ontiveros but bounced back to beat
Trinidad and Tobago’s Fabien Whitfield and Daniel Williams 21-17 and 21-17.

Cayman’s men’s second team of
Duncan Hamann and Philippe Deslandes lost to Canada’s top team of Josh Binstock
and Rick Van Huizen and to the Dominican Republic’s Yewddy Perez and German
Recio.

The Cayman women’s team of Jennifer
Bily and Cristin Alexander lost to Jamaica’s Cherine Richards and Cheryl Daley
in three sets in their first match and then were well beaten by last year’s
champs here, the Puerto Rican pair of Yarleen Santiago and Dariam Acevedo.

There are a record 40 teams entered
for this tournament which means matches have to be scheduled for night time
under floodlights.

Play continued on Saturday from 9am
and the semi-finals and finals will be played on Sunday with the finals
scheduled for around 4.30pm.
