Billy Ebanks was a driver to watch heading into the latest local drag race.
With a resounding class victory, the West Bay native proved his American muscle could flex the best.
Ebanks steadied his Dodge Daytona to the class 1A victory at Breakers Speedway on Saturday.
His drag-ready car bested Sammy Jackson and his 2002 white Chevy Camaro at the Cayman Islands Drag Association’s first event titled Cayman’s Fastest.
For Ebanks the victory validates his standing as the fastest driver in Cayman.
Heading into the meet Ebanks took his Daytona to the fastest time at Breakers with a run of 5.567 seconds.
The car boasts a light-weight aluminium frame, an aluminium Dodge V8 race engine and a racing interior complete with an advanced roll cage and harnesses.
The two American muscle cars were not the only machines to create fireworks.
There was plenty of drama and intrigue in the motorcycle class as Humberto Rives set a new local record at Breakers.
Rives, on his Suzuki Hayabusa, initially ran a time of 5.807s at 121mph during qualifying before resetting the mark with a 5.702s pass.
Those times best the previous local mark held by West Bayer Dante ‘Ross’ Hydes, who ran his Honda CBR 1000 to a time of 5.994s last March.
In all over 24 cars came out to the meet. From a Porsche Carrera to a Toyota MR-2 the variety of rides was interesting.
There was even a celebrity presence as Bernie Bush served as MC for the races.
About the only thing that was amiss was the extremely lengthy qualifying process that spanned a number of hours.
Nevertheless the delay did not prevent solid showings from a number of competitors.
In particular Jordan Seales did well behind the wheel of his Mitsubishi Evolution III, with his 7.532s pass being a new record for stock turbo Evos.
