Chantelle is out of CARIFTAS

The Cayman Islands Athletic
Association has picked eight athletes for the CARIFTA Games 2011 in Jamaica
later this month but Cayman’s only medallist from last year, Chantelle
Morrison, is not in the squad.

The Games run from April 23-25 in
Montego Bay but Morrison is missing because she failed to reach the qualifying
time in the girls Under-20 100 metres.

Morrison, 17, won 100m gold in
spectacular style a year ago before her adoring fans at the Truman Bodden
Sports Complex, but pulled a hamstring in the 200m heats and had to withdraw.

She only returned to light training
in December which left too little time to get 100 per cent sharp to take on
runners much older and more experienced. At best she could have only expected
to reach the finals.

Her coach Tyrone Yen said: “We
decided she was not ready and did not want to risk injury again. She started
jogging on the beach in December and January but has only run three meets this
year. We are now focusing on meets like the World Youth and Commonwealth Youth
later in the year when, hopefully, she will be fully prepared.”

In the squad are Ashleigh Nalty
(girls U20 high jump), Travis Webb (boys U20 high jump), Alex Pascal (boys U20
javelin), Tiffany Cole (girls U17 800m and 1500m), Amelia Gillespie (girls U17
long jump), Gerome Bodden (boys U17 100m and 200m), Jonathan Frederick (boys
U17 shot put and discus) and Jorel Bellafonte (boys 800m and 1500m). The
coaches are Kenrick Williams and Yen. Team manager is Ventisha Conolly.

Yen is optimistic that Cayman can
come back with some medals. “Two of our team won medals at the CUT
Championships last year. They were Tiffany Cole who got a bronze in the 800m
and Jonathan Frederick who got a silver in the shot.

“Ashleigh Nalty won a bronze in the
high jump at the CAC Games and Jorel Bellafonte recently beat all the Jamaicans
at their championships so we’re confident that he can be a contender for
