After a strange turn of events weeks ago, local autocross is back on track. The next monthly race is taking place this weekend with racers looking to dodge cones and post low times.
This month’s Time Attack meet, put on by the Cayman Motorsports Association, takes place this Sunday 17 April. The Progressive loop on Sparky Drive in George Town sees tire-shredding start from 12noon.
Taking centre stage will be the usual suspects. Keith Tibbetts III’s Ace Paint Subaru Impreza, being driven by Michael Weatherford, will be looking to maintain its strong showing in the All Wheel Drive segment. Tibbetts III is also expected to have his Valvoline Subaru Impreza Sti in the Unlimited segment to challenge Bobby Hulse and his flat black Toyota Altezza. Ian Charlery will once again grace the field in a Honda Integra Type-R along with Cody Bowen.
News of this weekend’s race comes after the March event was cancelled. The cancellation came as a result of a schedule clash with a drag race put on by the Cayman Islands Drag Racing Association. A number of dexterity racing regulars were also at Breakers for the Cayman’s Fastest event including Ian Tibbetts in his Chevy Corvette.
Prior to this Sunday’s meet, the last race was back in late February (which served as the season opener). One of the star drivers at that event was Jimel McLean, who made his return to autocross after a slight layoff behind the wheel of a Honda Civic hatchback.
One of the new happenings this month is a reduced entry fee. For the rest of the year racers will only pay $20 to compete in each race (except the Al and Jay Bodden memorial race).
Mandatory registration is Friday 15 April at Parkers auto supply store at 7pm. For more information e-mail [email protected]
