Elderly bicyclist succumbs to injuries
Royal Cayman Islands Police have confirmed a 72-year-old bicyclist died early Friday from injuries suffered in a Thursday night wreck in North Side.
According to police, the man was riding his bicycle along Hutland Road around 7.30pm Thursday when he was struck by a passing vehicle.
The accident happened near Chisholm’s Grocery store. Witnesses said the bicycle and car collided and that it was not immediately clear who was at fault in the crash.
The man suffered serious head injuries and was transported to the Cayman Islands hospital where he died in the early morning hours of Friday.
He was later identified as Graham Rivers, a retired civil servant who was employed at the Public Works Department for a number of years.
Police ask anyone who was in the area at the time of the accident to contact the RCIPS Traffic Management Unit on 946-6254.
There were no details provided by police regarding the female driver of the vehicle involved in the crash.
Thursday night’s accident is the first road fatality to occur in the Cayman Islands this year.
