Intel to make faster chips

SAN FRANCISCO — For decades, computers have
gotten faster as engineers squeezed more electronic switches onto computer
chips. But that progress had been threatened as engineers confronted physical
limitations on how much smaller they can go. Intel announces a breakthrough:
Rather than improve the switches, known as transistors, by using new materials,
engineers have completely redesigned them. That means computers should enjoy
faster computers for many years to come, and Intel will be able to better compete
in the growing market for mobile devices.
