Open water swimming dominated the sports pages recently as the Flowers Group wrapped up their busiest
schedule yet. First, Australian ultra-distance specialist Penny Palfrey swam
the world-record distance of 67.25 miles from Little Cayman to East End, Grand
Cayman, lasting an incredible 40 hours and 41 minutes. Then the 19th staging of
the annual Flowers One Mile Sea Swim had a record 850-plus entrants, and
American swimmer Charles ‘Chip’ Peterson broke the course record in 17:06 and
pocketed US$5,000 prize money. All in all, it was a great week for Cayman’s
open water swimming scene. No wonder Premier McKeeva Bush took time out from
his busy schedule to watch the Flowers Sea Swim, which started at the
Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and ended at Royal Palms.
