At approximately 10:07pm Sunday night, marathon swimmer
Penny Palfrey made a new world record by swimming 67.25 miles from Little
Cayman to Grand Cayman in 40 hours and 41 minutes.
Despite concerns that she would be unable to even stand once
she got to shore, Ms Palfrey reached the beach at Morritt’s and walked ashore
to the cheers of hundreds of supporters before climbing into a stretcher and
being transported to George Town Hospital.
Her face swollen, puffy and unrecogniseable, she raised her
arms in victory as she came ashore.
She was unable to speak because her mouth and tongue were
severely swollen.
Frank Flowers, who organised the swim said he was immensely
proud of the swimmer.
Check back later for more details and read Tuesday’s
Caymanian Compass.
