Brett earns fresh props

Cayman’s swim sensation Brett Fraser has put yet another feather in his cap – this time earning recognition as an Academic All-American.

According to the Florida University website, the two-time National Collegiate Athletics Association division one men’s swimming champion was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Fraser states he is pleased to receive the honour.

“I would like to sincerely thank everyone that has surrounded me the past four years with their support,” Fraser said. “Without that support from my family, coaches, team-mates and the University of Florida, this would not have been possible. Receiving an academic All-America honour solidifies my aspirations I had for my senior year at Florida.”

The George Town native is the 14th male Gator swimmer to be selected to the team and the 11th under current head coach Gregg Troy. Fraser wrapped up his collegiate career this past March by capturing two national titles at the 2011 NCAA Championships. He was also a 2011 NCAA postgraduate scholarship recipient.

To be eligible for Academic All-America recognition, a student-athlete must have been named First Team Academic All-District. And to be considered for that award, a student-athlete must have achieved a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 3.30, be at least a sophomore academically and be a starter or key player on the team.

Brett was named to the third team for the first time after achieving an impressive 3.43 GPA in finance, also making it onto the academic honour roll for the South Eastern Conference three times. He was named to the first team last season, to the delight of Sports Minister the Hon. Mark Scotland.

“Congratulations to Brett,” Scotland said. “He is the ultimate role model. Not only is he pushing the limits with his swimming, but he is showing every aspiring student that academics needn’t lag behind. We are proud to have someone like Brett represent us on the world stage and wish him well for the future.”
