An expert on Type 1 diabetes is on island Wednesday, 15 June, for a public meeting on new technologies, pump information and screenings.
Registered nurse Della Matheson, Type 1 diabetes TrialNet coordinator at the University of Miami, will speak on What’s on the Horizon for Type 1 Diabetes at 4.30pm on the third floor of the George Town Public Library.
Free Type 1 diabetes screening will be available from 3pm for families of people with Type 1 Diabetes.
Ms Matheson has been involved in research aimed at prevention of Type 1 Diabetes for the last 19 years. Type 1 diabetes develops if the body cannot produce any insulin. She has been a Certified Diabetes Educator for the past 26 years and has Type 1 diabetes herself.
Her talk is part of a week-long focus on diabetes in the Cayman Islands.
“We are looking forward to providing this additional resource for the children and young persons we know with Type 1 Diabetes, as well as adults with Type 1 Diabetes also,” said Christina Rowlandson, chair of the Advisory Committee, Cayman Islands Diabetes Charitable Trust. “Research and education will help us prevent the development and complications of Type 1 Diabetes.”
According to a press release, it is important for relatives of people with Type 1 diabetes to be properly screened because they have a 10 to 15 times greater risk for developing the disease than people with no family history. To do a test, a small sample of blood is drawn from a person’s arm.
Diabetes Week, from 12-18 June, is the annual fundraising and awareness programme of the Cayman Islands Diabetes Charitable Trust. Pre-registration is recommended for the screening. For more information, call 926-1053, email [email protected] or visit www.diabetes.ky
