Roshad jets around to nab $6K

Roshad Goff is a familiar name in Cayman’s personal watercraft racing fraternity.

He is a long-time member of Tony’s Toys racing team and has been ripping up waves for over three years. This Monday on the annual Queen’s Birthday holiday, the West Bayer earned arguably his biggest accolade.

Goff was the overall winner for the 2011 Jet Around Cayman race. He would be the first rider home by a wide margin with a time of one hour, 16 minutes and fifty seconds. That mark would net him the Pro Class and Expert Open titles and two cheques for US$6,000.

After receiving his kudos, Goff would say in passing that his team is the reason for his success.

“I’m happy to win this and I couldn’t have done it without the guys around me at Tony’s Toys racing,” Goff said. “It was tough out there but God willing I will be back to win it again next year.”

For the record the waters around Cayman would prove to be quite choppy. Of the 25 initial competitors registered for the race, 10 would drop out due to their watercrafts breaking down in between the three pit stops at Over the Edge (North Side), East End dock and South Sound dock.

Aside from Goff another local racer who earned props was Gary ‘GJ’ Whittaker Junior. Representing team Nuttin 2 Lose, Whittaker would place second in the Pro Class and Expert Open divisions in a time of one hour, 21 minutes and 57 seconds. For his efforts he would take home a cheque for US$1500 and a sponsor goodie bag.

Daron McLean was another top local with team Tryin A Ting. Thanks to a time of one hour, 27 minutes and three seconds, he would win the Amateur class and place third in the Expert Open segment. As a result, he would take home two cheques for US$1,000. Team-mate Nathan McLean would win the rookie class and finish third in the Amateur ranks. His time of one hour, 40 minutes and 49 seconds would nab him US$1000.

The race’s other winner would be Sean Childers of team Wes-Tec Performance as he sported a time of one hour, 41 minutes and 10 seconds. His efforts would earn him US$400.

Mike Klippenstein of team Kirk Marine came third in the Pro class with a time of one hour, 25 minutes and 40 seconds. Javier Medina of team Nuttin 2 Lose placed second in the Amateur division in one hour, 36 minutes and 23 seconds. Paul Rousseau Junior of team Action Racing finished second on the rookie class in a time of one hour, 56 minutes, 32 seconds.

On the whole the visiting riders were decent. Team Guadeloupe fielded four racers in Cedric Ramassamy, 22, Patrick Gounouman, 30, Pascal Gounouman, 24 and Fabrice Limon, 32 (Davy Vaitilingon, 25, did not race as previously expected). All would race in the Pro class with Patrick being unofficially the fifth rider home and Pascal coming sixth. Meanwhile American Robert Greenwald would race in the Pro class under team Tryin A Ting and Filfy Pirates. He would unofficially be the seventh rider home.
