Bodden Town boys chase U16 repeat

Team Bodden Town seeks repeat glory this weekend.

Saturday 18 June marks the final for the PricewaterhouseCoopers Under-16 Basketball League. Storming the hall of the University College of the Cayman Islands at 4pm will be defending champions Bodden Town and rookie club Shockwaves.

Bodden Town, featuring star big man Christopher Collins, downed Wesleyan Christian Academy 48-31 in the semi-finals. Collins had a monstrous double-double showing with 20 points and 23 rebounds. He had help from point guard Dominique Martucee (15 points, two three-pointers and three steals).

For Wesleyan coaches Tim Stroup and Ron Profitt, it’s a tough end to a season that saw the squad stumble into the playoffs as they slipped from second to fourth place. Nevertheless the coaches got great effort from star players Travis Stroup (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Tim Corbett (11 points, four rebounds).

Now Bodden Town coaches James ‘Cadillac’ Collins and Tim Howard face a tough test in the Shockwaves and coach Jonathan Powery. A fixture in youth basketball, Powery will be looking for another title from the sidelines. This time around he takes a second-ranked team that beat a fiesty Cayman Brac side 51-39 in the semis.

Phillip Webb showed his regular season prowess was no fluke. The league’s leading scorer (averaging 24.4 points) and rebounder (averaging 25.1 boards) dropped 35 points and 26 rebounds on the Brackers. Giving support was Arin Taylor with eight points and four steals.

Cayman Brac countered with a dynamic duo in Josh Irby (14 points and four rebounds) and Rivers Anthony (11 points, five rebounds).

News of this weekend’s final comes after the U16 league all-star games on Sunday at Camana Bay. The boys and girls matches were equally entertaining, with final scores of 45-44 and 49-44 respectively. The Most Valuable Players were Maynor Brooks and Rochelle Gardener.
